Long Weekend DIY Projects

POSTED August 21, 2018

Can you believe it’s almost Labor Day? Where did the summer go?! With the three-day weekend fast approaching, if you haven’t planned a getaway, turn your 72-hour stay-cation into three days of creative productivity with these ideas from around town and on the Net!

Make Your Bed!

We don’t mean straightening the linens and the bedcovers, although we do think making a bed in the morning starts the day off on a productive note. We’re talking about actually MAKING your bed — from the bottom up! Using materials you can snag for a few bucks at your favorite flea market or the local home improvement store, you can turn these ordinary pieces into a one-of-a-kind bed. Or, two-of-a-kind, if you make one identical to one of these ideas from Bob Vila!

Our favorites are the Hairpin Bed which looks the easiest and is mid-century modern cool, the Rustic Bed with repurposed crates for storage (can you ever have too much storage?) and the Suspended Bed which hangs (and swings!) from the ceiling.

Just for Kids

If you haven’t visited the Instructables website lately, head over and look at the Doodle Bot. The author of this clever do-it-yourself project — a former cub scout leader — created something perfect for 8 to 12-year-olds. Using an old CD, electric toothbrush and markers, this vibrobot (who knew that was a thing?) is simple to make and lots of fun to play with – at any age!

While most tutorials for pinhole cameras are pretty involved, this one we found on Facebook from a pair of  photographers is super easy and the photos you can take will blow your mind. You will need an SLR camera to start with, and you will end up transforming a lens cover into your pinhole. The transformation takes no time, but you will likely spend the rest of your weekend shooting photos!

Creative Organizing

Not every guy gets excited about DIY projects that organize the garage, but here are three ideas from The Saw Guy that seem like clutter busters and brilliant built-in convenience. The folding workbench table is like a murphy bed, it’s flush to the wall when you don’t need it, easy up and at ‘em when you do. Or there’s the reclaimed wooden bike rack, and the “hold everything” tool rack, which would make anyone who spends any time DIYing, very happy,

You could spend the long weekend white-washing garage sale finds reupholstering an old office chair, or making a simple birdbath, but if none of these ideas appeal to you, we have one final suggestion.

Home Depot at 333 W. Allen St.in Castle Rock regularly hosts do-it-yourself classes and coming up are two that might be of interest. On Saturday, August 25 from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m., you can learn how to make a feature wall of shiplap. The on-trend experts at Home Depot will show you everything you need to know to plan, prepare and install a great looking accent wall.

And on Saturday, September 1, Home Depot will host a class in creating a field goal game from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. What’s that, you ask? A workshop event for kids and parents, ages 5 to 12 to build a game and to test your aim as you prepare for football season!
