During this first weekend of the New Year, why not try something new? With an array of cultural events and activities in the Castle Rock area, take your pick of something different to do. From a castle tour to an art show and reception, to a dance class or a 3-D movie about the world-famous Natural History Museum in London, you’ll find unique happenings near Crystal Valley in this first weekend of 2020!

TOUR A CASTLE!
This is a fun event for families, couples, or friends! Cherokee Castle’s unique architecture combines aspects of the Western United States and a 1450’s Scottish-style castle built in the 1920’s. The Castle is home to historic collections of fine art, furnishings, and memorabilia from around the world—and you’ll see it all on the one-hour tour!

On Saturday afternoon, you have the option of adding a festive Tea to the tour! Get dressed up like royalty, then enjoy an afternoon tea prior to the tour! The Tea includes a light meal with a seasonal menu, complete with scones with clotted cream and jam, finger sandwiches and pastries.

MUSEUM ALIVE 3-D MOVIE
Night at the Museum fans will love this 3-D take on the idea of a museum’s creatures coming to life at night—only this time, it’s a fact-based journey through the world-famous Natural History Museum in London. 

Famous British broadcaster and historian David Attenborough takes you on a special kind of tour of the museum’s displays, one where they magically come to life in front of your eyes. The special effects and ground-breaking CGI technology enhance the collaboration of historical experts and curators from London’s Natural History Museum.

TAKE A SPIN ON THE ICE
Ice skating is one of the best family activities, and there’s no better place to do it than the community Rink at the Rock in Castle Rock. Kids, teens, and adults—as well as friends and relatives visiting from out of town—will appreciate the chance to get some exercise in this fun and social environment.

Skating lessons and rentals are also available!

HOLIDAY DISPLAY OF LIGHTS
It’s your final chance to take in this festive display of holiday lights before they’re taken down for the season. Schweiger Ranch in nearby Lone Tree is an historic working ranch that gives you a sense of what life was like back in the olden days. They’re still all decked out for the holiday season, so take a short drive over for one last chance to ooh and aah at the pretty lights!

SOUND OF MUSIC ON STAGE 
Everyone’s favorite musical movie is even more memorable in the theatre! This classic true story of the Von Trapp family and the singing nun who becomes their nanny is recreated on stage with all of your favorite songs performed live!

Treat the family to this heartwarming story of hope and courage! This show is recommended is for ages 6 and up.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS ART SHOW AND RECEPTION
For an intimate look at the work and methods of local artists, the annual Great Expectations art show will present the work of eleven artists living along the Front Range. Every type of media will be represented by this diverse group of emerging artists, including drawing, ceramics, installation art, painting, fiber art, and new media.

The FREE opening reception features the artists giving talks about their works and answering questions. This group exhibit will introduce you to some of the brightest artists working along the Front Range corridor today!

BALLROOM DANCE CLASS FOR ADULTS

A great way to have fun and meet some new friends in the process! You’ll learn new dance moves or improve the ones you have, including the swing, waltz, rumba, cha cha, tango, and foxtrot. GREAT COMIC ALERT!
Joe Zimmerman, one of the original members of the wildly popular Beards of Comedy, will be appearing in Denver with his accessible brand of humor. Zimmerman pairs a love for absurdity with a flair for fun to emerge with a stand-up routine that was personally noticed by Ricky Gervais in the Conan contest finals!

You may remember this New York City-based comedian from his Comedy Central debut on John Oliver’s New York Stand Up Show or in his Comedy Central Half Hour stand-up special in 2014. He made his late night debut on the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson and has performed on Nickelodeon’s NickMom Night Out, as well as appeared on the nationally syndicated The Bob & Tom Show. Zimmerman was even chosen as one of the acclaimed New Faces at the Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal.

SOUND OF MUSIC DAY CAMP
Treat your young actor, singer, or dancer to a special behind-the-scenes event with the cast and crew of The Sound of Music! Kids ages 6-13 will spend a fun-filled afternoon at this theatre day camp which includes a tour of the theatre, hands-on experiences with the set, and a personal meet-and-greet with the cast members.

Performance tickets to The Sound of Music are additional.

BRUNCH AT THE CASTLE
Chances are this has been on your to-do list for quite a while—a family brunch at a castle! Start out the new year on high note by getting together a bunch of friends and family for this special and elegant brunch! 

The brunch buffet offers a seasonal menu of savory items and sweet breakfast pastries fit for royalty. There’s also a cash bar where you can purchase a mimosa or a bloody mary. After brunch, you’ll get to take a tour of Cherokee Castle, where you’ll get a glimpse of its rich history and an intimate look upon all its treasures.
