Things to Do This Weekend, May 19-22 and beyond!

Whether it’s comedy, drama, music or history, this weekend is FULL of things to see, hear and do near Castle Rock. Lavell Crawford is coming to town, there’s a kid-centric musical about the early life of Frida Kahlo, Denver’s own Andrew Orvedahl is performing or you can drive your beloved vintage or classic car to the Cruise-In Car Show and hob nob with other car enthusiasts!

Over one hundred years ago, the US influenced the creation of the independent nation of Panama as a means of undertaking the construction of a canal linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. While the Panama Canal was an engineering and commercial triumph, it also introduced tension between the people of Panama and the US. Join Active Minds as we discuss the history of Panama’s journey out of the shadow of the US, as well as gain an understanding of Panama today.

Andrew Orvedahl is a comedian, writer, and actor based out of Denver, Colorado. As a stand-up he has appeared on several late-night shows including The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. He also co-created and starred in the sitcom Those Who Can’t, currently on HBO Max. 

Andrew’s comedy mixes skewering observations with true stories from his life, and he has performed coast to coast for almost 20 years. Currently Andrew can be heard on the popular podcast The Grawlix Saves The World on Starburns audio.

Cherokee Castle’s unique architecture combines aspects of the Western United States and a 1450’s Scottish-style castle built in the 1920’s. The Castle is home to historic collections of fine art, furnishings and memorabilia from around the world. A guided Tour of the Castle offers an intimate look upon one of Colorado’s finest hidden gems and all of the treasures housed inside. The history of Cherokee Ranch & Castle Foundation, including the legacy of founder, Tweet Kimball gives guests a great understanding and appreciation for the arts, education and conservation. Public Castle Tours are 90 minutes long and private tours are available as well.

Comedian Lavell Crawford is quickly climbing the comedic ranks and becoming one of the hottest stars in the biz today.

Lavell filmed a one-hour special Can A Brother Get Some Love and has appeared in Comedy Central’s Workaholics and he is a recurring character on the AMC’s Emmy Award-winning Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. He was also seen regularly on E! Entertainment’s Chelsea Lately and Lopez Tonight.

Lavell gained huge national exposure on NBC’s Last Comic Standing. He recorded his own half-hour stand-up special, Comedy Central Presents: Lavell Crawford, shortly after. Lavell’s stand-out work includes appearances on Shaquille O’Neal Presents: All Star Comedy Jam on Showtime, Russell Simmons’ Def Comedy Jam on HBO, Showtime at the Apollo, Martin Lawrence Presents 1st Amendment, Comic’s Unleashed with Byron Allen, Steve Harvey’s Big Time, Comedy Central’s Premium Blend, Motown Live, and BET’s Comic View.

Lavell has appeared in the films Baby’s Mama Drama, Beverlyhood and Ghetto South Problems and has built a very strong fan base playing theatres, comedy clubs and colleges across the nation in addition to comedy festivals.

Saturday, May 21

Join the Colorado Chamber Players as they perform the beloved African folk tale Tunjiand the Giant, set to lively music and narration by David Mullikin, along with other short kid-friendly pieces. Kids can participate by playing small percussion instruments (rattles and rain sticks) with guidance from the CCP. At the end of the concert, kids can try small string instruments and recorder in an instrumental petting zoo. Children invited to participate on stage along-side the Chamber are required to wear a mask. 

This affordable series is designed to introduce your little ones to the incredible world of arts and culture. These family-friendly events are low cost and 60 minutes or under, allowing kids to explore and engage with the arts. A lifetime of the arts starts one discovery at a time!

Based on the novel Don Quixote de la Mancha by Miguel de Cervantes, Don Quixote tells the story of the old hidalgo, who reads many chivalric romance novels. The finale to the Philharmonic’s Comeback Season will be a memorable event!  JoAnn Falletta leads the Philharmonic in a program that is both timeless and current.

The program includes Mozart’s “Haffner” Symphony, Copland’s Appalachian Spring, and new voices – featuring Korean artist Ji Su Jung on marimba and a resounding conclusion to our comeback year with Puerto Rican composer Roberto Sierra’s Fandangos.

Central City Opera presents an inspiring new opera written especially for children and families, Frida Kahlo and the Bravest Girl in the World. Mariana, a young girl living in the heart of Mexico City, whose home is full of beautiful artwork by Frida Kahlo. She is encouraged by her family to visit Kahlo and have her portrait painted the renowned artist, but is terrified at the thought. There are rumors that Frida keeps skeletons above her bed and exotic pets in her Blue House — people have even said that she is a witch. As Kahlo begins to paint Mariana in her studio, this fear quickly disappears, and a friendship blooms between the two. Mariana meets Frida’s husband, Diego Rivera, and learns of the horrible accident that almost killed her new friend. Through the magic of opera, Frida’s parrot, dog, and monkey all sing, and the audience is invited to join in on the fun as well. (Sensory-friendly performance at 4:00 p.m.)

The CJRO once again joins acclaimed interpreter of “The Great American Songbook,” Steve Lippia for an evening of Sinatra classics. This concert is always a sellout!

Steve Lippia has become one of the most prominent, in-demand vocalists and has quickly established his place among the finest interpreters of “standards” and traditional pop music in the nation.  Steve’s youthful, energetic talent and powerful show creates a perfect blend of “classic” with “today.”  His show introduces a new generation to this timeless music while appealing to long-time listeners.

Steve has headlined in highly successful, extended engagements at the Rio Suites Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas and Resorts Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, where SRO audiences lined up more than two hours before showtime to vie for seating. Ryan O’Neill was born and raised in a motel in Indiana. He ditched the Midwest and headed to Los Angeles after his dream of becoming a professional race car driver literally went up in a cloud of smoke, dust, metal and a concussion. He’s a regular at the world famous Comedy Store and a fixture on the LA comedy scene. He’s toured with the likes of Bert Kreischer, Ari Shafrir and Dave Chappelle. He’s appeared on Comedy Central’s This is Not Happening storyteller show. And made numerous podcast appearances on Bert Kreischer’s Bertcast, Ari Shaffir’s Skeptic Tank and The Church of What’s Happening Now with Joey Diaz. He’s currently one half of the popular Danish and O’Neill Podcast and tours the country spreading deviancy across this great land.

Grammy-nominated Celtic Woman, the most successful all-female Irish group in history returns with an 83-city North American tour in 2022. This year brings a new PBS special begins airing November 27 and their first brand-new studio album in three years. Celtic Woman’s “POSTCARDS FROM IRELAND” showcases the accomplished recording ensemble and world-class performing collective, celebrates Ireland’s rich musical and cultural heritage, and builds on the group’s 16-year legacy of introducing some of Ireland’s most talented singers and musicians to the world stage.
