Winter White Design Ideas

POSTED January 10, 2017

When you design with white, the resulting interior can be fresh, warm and inviting. Shades of white are the perfect interior design palette to counter the gloomy doldrums of winter. Always a chic choice, decorating with white is a here-to-stay classic, and it doesn’t have to be cold and impersonal.

To prove the point, here’s a little inspiration and a few tips from top designers. Whether paint or furniture, wall coverings or accessories white is the perfect backdrop for some well-placed pizazz.

Picking Paint

By themselves, white paints “all look alike,” but when you compare chips side-by-side, the way this month’s Veranda does, you immediately see the cool to warm variations. The definite gray in Sherwin Williams Oyster White, the yellow in Farrow and Bell Joa’s White and the lavender tinge in Sherwin Williams Spatial White are all noticeably different.

Another 20 color variations in Elle Décor offer subtle differences that can show off  your artwork, highlight your millwork or set a serene scene in a bedroom.

To find the right white, you might take a few trial-and-error matching trips to the paint store. But before you start, swipe through a few monochromatic rooms for ideas and inspiration.

Blackband Design

Top designers use classic white shades to create a relaxed living style in Country Living with distressed furniture, flowers, plants, and muted accessories. The result? Rooms that look lovely and lived in.

Wood warms up even the most sparsely furnished white room, like this bedroom by Blackband Design, with its rustic panel plank doors.  And you don’t need a beach to appropriate the design ideas in Coastal Living, just a willingness to decorate with light!
