Attractive (and Easy!) Accent Walls

POSTED October 6, 2020

As we move inside again, a weekend project to refresh your home that won’t break the bank or involve weeks of construction, is to add an accent wall to a living, dining, or family room. From adding a pop of on-trend color or changing the look of your wall completely with wooden planks, accent walls add interest and personality to otherwise ordinary (yawn!) rooms. The best part? You can finish most of these projects in a few hours. Talk about instant gratification!

Hot Colors for 2021

It may only be fall, but Behr and Sherwin-Williams are already releasing 2021 color trend palettes for your future planning. According to the color experts themselves, natural shades from pastel browns to greens are IN. An emphasis on harmonious and calming colors like light blues, lavenders and pinks, warm grays, and deep rust flows throughout the shade line, most likely due to all the extra time we’re spending at home these days. One big color you’re likely to see on accent walls may surprise you — Sherwin-Williams’ Urbane Bronze, a deep gray-brown makes for a stunning accent wall and reminds us of luxe leather, natural stone, and deep forests.

Thinking Outside the Paint Can

Add a pop of “wow!” to your accent wall with some texture. We love a good Joanna Gaines-inspired shiplap or board wall, and you’ll never believe how easy and inexpensive adding this farmhouse touch to your home can be. With peel and stick wood, updating an accent wall is a project you can finish in just a few hours.

We absolutely love the drift of using wood to create geometric patterns on an accent wall – it’s a warm, creative addition to any type of room. There’s no need to complicate things — even a simple wooden board addition to a wall creates a stunning visual, especially with two-toned paint.  Not into the idea of permanently altering a wall? Or perhaps you have a teenager whose mind will change by Valentine’s Day? Consider using decals or even washi tape to add patterns to the wall — the tape is nearly magical in its ability to stay on a surface, and when you’re ready for another change, it won’t mark your wall!

Wallpaper is Back In Style

Wallpaper is a great way to refresh a room and you can go big and make a huge splash, or take a more conservative approach. But either way, wallpaper is back in a big way — and don’t worry, this isn’t a look you’re likely to find in any outdated grandma’s house. From big floral patterns to stripes to abstract designs, wallpaper is so impactful  these days! Use bold wallpaper to add excitement to a small corner or deck out a wall in your powder room. We’re seeing lots of options for every taste and color palette.

If you’re looking for something a little less permanent, try using framed wallpaper panels — not only does this cut down on cost, but you can remove and switch them out with the seasons or as your tastes change.
