Coming Up: A Dance and Concert Weekend!

This is the weekend when local dancing talent shines, with multiple performances highlighting classical ballet, jazz, tap, hip-hop, contemporary, and even comic ballet! You will be delighted by the enthusiasm and talent of young dancers from preschool through high school, who are enrolled in various dance programs. It’s also the start of outdoor concerts and movies, so pack a picnic and head to the park for a fun night out!

FREE SUMMER CONCERTS HAVE BEGUN!
The wait is over! The first of the FREE outdoor summer concerts is here in the Discovery Park amphitheater in Parker! And what a venue, with an open-space design, monumental art pieces, and even an interactive water fountain for the kids! Plan on spending every Thursday of the summer here, gathering with family and friends on a blanket or lawn chairs, as you soak in the sounds of summer!

Tonight’s concert features Wash Park, a powerhouse band with dynamic vocalists, a full horn section, and a rhythm section that will knock your socks off! You will be on your feet moving along with the choreography of the the band! Voted as Denver A-List’s #2 Band in the state, the group is known for its powerful and faithful reproductions of the horn band-era dance music of the 70s to the top 40 hits of today.

BALLET + COMEDY = GREAT FUN
If you’ve never seen a comic ballet, you are in for an entertaining evening! Coppélia is a story about an inventor who has made a life-size dancing doll that is so life-like, the village fool falls in love with her. Franz, the unfortunate fool, pushes aside his true love,  Swanhilda, in favor of the doll. Swanhilda decides to dress up like the doll so Franz thinks it came to life, ultimately saving him from an untimely end at the hands of the inventor. And all this in the form of a ballet!

A PLAY ABOUT THE BIG TOP!
Step right up, ladies and gentlemen! The classic Tony Award-winning American musical, Barnum, is a fun-filled celebration of the life of P.T. Barnum and the colorful world of the circus. This production has been updated with a fresh look, but the original spirit of the show shines on!

The New York Times calls it “pure, exhilarating fun,” and it’s perfect entertainment for the whole family! Don’t miss the jugglers, acrobats, clowns, and the first ringleader of them all—Mr. P.T. Barnum! Fans of the circus and the theatre will love this exciting show!

DANCING THROUGH TIME
This showcase of a variety of dance techniques, including jazz, tap, hip hop, contemporary, and ballet, will take you through the ages as dancers explore different eras and styles of music.

EVQ Elite Dance Studio is a local studio that provides a creative outlet for people of all ages to express themselves through dance.

SWEET SIXTEEN DANCE PARTY
It’s the Colorado School of Dance that is celebrating a 16th birthday, so the current group of dancers will take you on a nostalgic journey highlighting the growth of the studio! Dancers from toddler to teen, as well as a few of the teachers, will present an exhilarating program with everything from jazz, tap and ballet, to hip hop and more!

The show opens with photos of the original one-room studio in 2002 to that of the directors in hard hats constructing the first studio in 2006 (still on Progress Way) to many anniversary photos and dances from over the years.

With a movie night taking place at the Blue Sky Aviation Gallery, what other movie would screen but Disney’s Planes? Bring the family and a blanket or lawn chairs to sit on, but no need to pack a picnic—fun food will be available for purchase!

CATTLE CROSSING 5K & FAMILY FUN TREK 
You don’t have to be a cowhand to enter this timed 5K run/walk—just dress like one! This unique themed race encourages western costumes and provides a full morning of Old West atmosphere. As part of the Parker Parks and Recreation Run Series, a Family Fun Trek will also be offered: a mile of laid-back, outdoorsy fun, which includes a “duck hunt” for the kids.

All participants of the Cattle Crossing 5K & Family Fun Trek will receive a commemorative “tin” campfire mug, free downloadable event photos, as well as a delicious post-race pancake breakfast and a chance to win prizes. So grab your cowboy hat and giddy-up to this race!

PANCAKE BREAKFAST AT THE HANGAR
This is your chance to check out the new Blue Sky Aviation Gallery, the nearby outpost of the Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum, have a delicious pancake breakfast, and support a good cause! The breakfast is being held to raise funds for a student-built RV-12 aircraft, under construction by 6th to 12th graders. Your entry fee includes access to the Boeing Blue Sky Aviation Gallery, as well as all the pancakes you can eat!

A WALK THROUGH TIME HIKE
A guided hike through the beautiful and historical land surrounding Cherokee Castle is as informative as it is fun. You’ll be introduced to the basic geology of the region, visit an archeological site, and learn a bit of local history, all while enjoying stunning views from the top of Cherokee Mountain.

This moderate hike follows primitive trails with limited elevation gains and lasts 2-1/2 hours. Children over 12 are welcome with an adult. There may be some steep off-trail hiking, so wear closed-toe hiking shoes or boots.

SUMMER READING ROAD TRIP
Oh, the places you’ll go—when you open a book! The Douglas County Libraries want to help! Kick off your summer vacation with a party at the library! There will be life-size games, a live DJ, and a bouncy castle—something for kids of all ages. Pick a book from the book fair, buy snacks from local food trucks, and register for a summer full of fun! Registration requested.

AN AFTERNOON WITH DEGAS AND EVENING GALA
Degas was one of the preeminent Impressionist painters who was famous for his vivid and realistic portraits of ballet dancers. The Denver Academy of Ballet brings his paintings to life in an exquisite performance that showcases the talents of its students. 

This impressive ballet recital features students form one of the premier dance schools in Colorado. The evening performance includes a Company Gala, celebrating the completion of a year of training.

LEARN ROBOTICS AND MANDARIN
What to do when the kids say they’re already bored? Bring them to these FREE Robotics and Mandarin classes! Everyone thinks robots are cool—because they are! So let your kids in on the art and science of building robots, including coding and robotics. In case Robotics turns out to be a piece of cake, stick around for the Mandarin lessons. Robotics class is from 2:00-3:30, and Mandarin is from 3:45-5:15.

BARNUM DAY CAMP
If your children love the theatre, treat them to a special day camp prior to the evening performance of Barnum. They’ll have a chance to see behind the scenes, meet-and-greet with the cast of the musical, get their hands on the set, and experience what it’s really like to be a part of a show. This fun educational adventure is designed for kids ages 6-13 and does not include performance tickets to Barnum.

STARLIGHT MOVIE NIGHT
It’s back! Starlight Movie Night in Castle Rock, sponsored by Crystal Valley builders, returns with a fun summer celebration including music, food, FREE bounce houses, kids’ activities and movie starting at dusk. In the Disney movie, Wreck It Ralph: Ralph Breaks the Internet, video game bad guy Ralph and fellow misfit Vanellope must risk it all by traveling to the World Wide Web in search of a replacement part to save Vanellope’s video game.

Bring your lawn chairs, blankets, or whatever is comfortable to sit on for the movie. Pack a picnic or snacks, say hello to your builders, and sit back and enjoy the show!

TRUE COLORS CHILDREN’S CONCERT
There is nothing as uplifting and joyful as hearing the sweet voices of children in concert! Treat yourself and the entire family to a colorful performance by the award-winning Colorado Springs Children’s Chorale. The program is a kaleidoscope of sights and sound in a fast-paced, entertaining show that will make you feel like singing along!
