Things to Buy in August
August heralds great deals on items (Black Friday notwithstanding) that will hit their lowest price points of the year. Researchers at Deal News compile daily lists about good deals from online retailers (including countdown freebies) and Passion for Savings rounds up fun finds and money-saving coupons for both online and brick and mortar stores. Here are their recommendations for the month.
School and Office Supplies
Schools in Douglas County start on August 10 and prices on office supplies, like reams of paper, notebooks, pens, pencils, tissue and paper towels are often reduced to pennies.
Passion for Savings comparison-shops for reduced prices and issues regular weekly reports. Check back to find out the latest discounts on items you and your students need for the 2017-2018 school year. Passion for Savings also posts a “what to stockpile” list for those things you tend to use up quickly.
Laptops are another back-to-school necessity for students and are discounted as much as 25 percent in August. Last year Deal News found aggressive discounts on laptops from stores like Dell Home, Lenovo and the Microsoft Store during the month of August. Best Buy offers price matching, which is another great way to save big on laptops.
Sheets and Storage
This is also the month people think about crisp new linens (think college dorm room sheets) and organization. You’ll start to see sales for sheets and storage containers. And with summer travel wrapping up, it’s easy to find good deals on luggage and camping gear.
Swing Sets and Outdoor Equipment
Temporary swimming pools go on sale this month and so do outdoor play sets. You can find some great savings at the big box stores and still get a month or more of playtime out of non-permanent pools, swing sets and slides. Plus, you’ll see end-of-summer deals on outdoor garden equipment, like lawn mowers, leaf blowers and landscaping tools.
It’s still hotter than a firecracker outside but this is the month for summer clothing and sports gear clearance sales. The pool at the Pinnacle is open for four more weeks so you could buy now/wear now AND stock up for next year!
If you’re looking for an upgrade, or just want to add to what you already have, August is a great month to buy new outdoor furniture. Check out the patio furniture sales curated by Deal News researchers, to get an idea about the discounts they’ve collected. Major retailers like Target and Walmart will also be marking down outdoor furniture to clear the way for fall merchandise.
While mattresses are not typically an August sale item, for the last two years, Sears, Walmart and US-Mattress have had respectable sales during the last two weeks of the month.
Things Not to Buy
You might want to delay your gratification and resist the temptation to buy the following items – if you want to save a few bucks.
Even though you may need a grill, and grilling is on your summer bucket list, try to wait until September when prices drop SIGNIFICANTLY for gas and charcoal grills and smokers.
iPhones and iPads
Retailers will try to get you to upgrade or buy your first iPhone or iPad this month, but it’s probably the worst time. Apple traditionally unveils new iPhones and iPads in September and October and even if you buy the same iteration, in a few months it will be a lot cheaper! Look for bargains from Apple resellers like Best Buy and Walmart, when the time comes.
